New Year, Better You

Nothing better than the cliche new year’s post. 

There’s such a comforting feeling in knowing it’s a fresh new year and we get the chance to be better than last year. 

What we all notice is everyone usually creates these easy to reach goals in bullet point form. Somewhere along the lines of…

  • Wake up early everyday
  • No carbs after 7
  • Work out everyday
  • Put $500 a month to a savings account

We’re all guilty of setting these goals, starting them the first week in January, and most of us are guilty of not continuing the next week. Or is this just me?!

I feel that because it’s a fresh new year I can take on anything and this will be the year I commit. Yet, I end up making goals like those and they never last to February. Why is this? Well, I have no idea. So, all I can do now is trial and error. Maybe just setting bullet point goals aren’t what works for me. 

For this year, instead of writing a list of my very specific goals on paper that I know I won’t do for a full year, I decided I would focus this year on ways to step out of my comfort zone. No “everyday” goals and no set deadlines. Just one major focus. So, If you want to join me, here’s some of the ways I’m going to try to step out of my comfort zone.      

Being confident even on the days you feel you can’t

This is never going to be easy. But I’m tired of beating myself up most of the time, and I’m sure you are too. We’re all humans and we all have our bad days, and this new year will bring those kinds of days, but on those bad days instead of hurting yourself more, find it in yourself to pull your chin up and tell yourself your friggin’ amazing.  

Go to networking events and workshops

I love meeting new people, which is why I have no idea why I’ve never pushed myself to networking events, I feel like I would love them. Make it a point to put yourself out there, brag about your accomplishments, and listen to others. Sign up for workshops and classes. Meetup.com is a great place to start. Be apart of communities, or make your own. Make your voice heard. 

Play around with your fashion sense

I have zero sense of fashion. It’s something I just let rock at this point. I’m very self conscious, and feel uncomfortable in most clothes I attempt to try on (which obviously I would like to fix). Step out of your little box when you’re shopping, grab clothes you would never think to wear and just try them on. If it looks horrible who cares, laugh it off, it’s just you in the dressing room. No one ever has to know you tried on that tight turtleneck dress that made your head look like it was popping out of the womb and the rest of your body was begging to come out. You know? 

Write more

I have slowly been writing a lot more but still nearly not as much as I should be, or would even like to be. Write everyday, no matter what. Not feeling it at all one day? Too bad, just write a short journal entry like a diary. Not everything you write needs to be shared. Make writing a ritual. 

Travel

Travel, travel, TRAVEL! Even if all you can squeeze in is one weekend trip. Do it! And if it’s really not possible, use this year to plan. Find an airbnb you’d kill to stay in, find an affordable place you want to go to, and just plan as if your going and before you know it, you’ll be there. I decided before this year ended I personally needed to fully plan something. In May, I will be on my way to a yoga retreat in thailand for 8 days. Stay tuned for those posts! 

Budget Your Money

This, I suck at. I kept track of the money I spent and the money I made for one full month this year and cringed because I totally spent more than I made. So I stopped because I was so distured. Which was horrible for me to do, but it’s so nice living in denial. Unfortunately though, keeping track of your expenses is important, so keep track of them!  

Stop over thinking… just do

I am an expert at thinking of something so great, then before I know it, I’m thinking of all the negatives as to how impossible it will be, instead of all the great that can come from it. This has to stop. You have an idea? Create a physical pros and cons list, if there’s more pros than cons, why are you not doing it? Everything is going to have its negatives, that’s what makes it challenging and exciting, but if there’s a positive to it, there’s no reason not to do something.

It’s going to be an amazing year. I can’t wait to share mine with all of you, and I can’t wait to read all about yours.
